Youth Choir
The History of the Sacred Heart Youth ChoirThe Sacred Heart Youth Choir was started in 1984 under the direction of Mr. Clarence Hightower. Under the direction of Mr. Hightower the choir learned different types of music, Latin to French to Gospel. At that time the choir practiced in one of the room’s in the parish house. Mr. Hightower was able to take the entire choir to singing engagements in his car, and now we need a bus. Before his death in 1988, Mr. Hightower recruited an assistance directress Mrs. Theresa Matthews. After Mr. Hightower’s death this legacy was passed on to Mr. Issac Prince. In 1989, Mr. Issac Prince became Sacred Heart’s Minister of Music until his retirement in 1998. The first youth choir’s concert was June 7, 1991 and they were called the Angelic sounds. Many of the Angelic Sounds have completed college, are working in a career and raising a family. Some of the Angelic Sounds members have their children as a part of the Sacred Heart Youth Choir now. Some of our former choir members have chosen music as their interest in life, like our now Director of Music, John Thorne. The Sacred Heart Youth Choir has had several talented people working with them in the last few years, Celia Collins, Eileen Orr, Joan Powell and Jerome Jackson. Now we have Mr. Jeffry Moore a very talented and creative person dedicated to bringing out the best in the choir members. Under the leadership of Jeffry Moore, Stephanie Flanagan, Theresa Matthews, Demetrius Farley, Director of Music John Thorne and Father Norman P. Thomas the legacy will continue. |
